Sofiia M, Grade 10, Kyiv

My name is Sofia M. I'm a 10th grader at PSI (Pechersk School International). The russian federation illegally invaded Ukraine on a full scale on February 24, 2022. My life has changed considerably because of this war. Initially, I had too much fear, anxiety, and thoughts that everything would stay this way forever. In order to get rid of all these feelings, I began writing poetry. Poetry then became the way for me to express my thoughts, emotions, and inner self. That is why I decided for my personal project to create an e-book of my own poetry, in which I describe what is going on in Ukraine as the war goes on.

I was using images of loss, fear, and alienation from individuals one loves, and issues that confront Ukrainians every day. Apart from this, translating my poems into English helped me stay occupied and feel connected to my nation. It also made it possible to reveal the truth about events in Ukraine.

The aim of my project is not just to show my own feelings, but also to showcase the courage and indestructible nature of the Ukrainian people, and to honor those events that became the turning point in our lives.

I think my project can be significant for my country, as poetry is another means to show the world the truth. For myself, the project is close to my heart as it allows me to contribute financially to Ukraine’s war effort and honour people who didn't come back home - those people who gave up their lives so we could live tomorrow.
